A CAZIMERO CHRISTMAS

December 21-23, 2007
We few, we
happy few, we band of brothers...
- Shakespeare
The Brothers Cazimero are
consummate performers who have made their indelible imprint on the face
of contemporary Hawaiian music. Their talent, longevity and sales
success over the past 30 years have placed them in a league of their
own. In 2001, the Hawaii Theatre produced A CAZIMERO CHRISTMAS for the
first time on our historic stage. This year The Brothers Cazimero have
once again agreed to become a Performance Partner with the Hawaii
Theatre to present a wonderful Hawaiian holiday entertainment.
With professional musicians,
professional entertainers, professional designers, and professional artistic
direction;
A CAZIMERO CHRISTMAS
will provide a unique opportunity for young, local hula practitioners as the
Hawaii Theatre Center also partners with the Kalihi- Palama Culture & Arts
Society and the Queen Lili`uokalani Keiki Hula Festival as we feature
winners of the Miss and Master Keiki Hula and others as they rehearse,
dance, and perform along side seasoned, practicing professionals.
In this conservatory atmosphere of
A CAZIMERO CHRISTMAS,
with all of the professional accompaniments, these young performers not only
learn their craft but also begin building their professional resume in a

In order to make himself appear more
important, a miller lied to the king saying that his daughter could spin
straw into gold. The king called for the girl, shut her in a tower room
with straw and a spinning wheel, and demanded that she spin the straw
into gold by morning, for three nights, or be executed. (Some versions
say that if she failed, she would be skewered and then fricasseed like a
pig.) She had given up all hope, when a dwarf (Rumpelstiltskin)
appeared in the room and spun straw into gold for her in return for her
necklace; then again the following night for her ring. On the third
night, when she had nothing with which to reward him,
Rumpelstiltskin spun straw into gold for a promise that the girl's
first-born child would become his.
The king was so
impressed that he let the miller's daughter marry his
son, the prince, but when their first child was born,
Rumpelstiltskin
returned to claim his payment: "Now give me what you
promised". The queen was frightened and offered him all
the wealth she had if she could keep the child.
Rumpelstiltskin
refused but finally agreed to give up his claim to the
child if the queen could guess his name in three days.
At first she failed, but before the second night, her
messenger overheard the dwarf hopping about his fire and
singing:
"Today I bake, tomorrow I brew,
Today for one
Tomorrow for two
Little knows my royal dame
Rumpelstiltskin
is my name"
When the dwarf
came to the queen on the third day and she revealed his
name,
Rumpelstiltskin lost his bargain. In the
1812 edition of the Brothers Grimm tales,
Rumpelstiltskin then "ran away angrily, and
never came back". The ending was revised in a final 1857
edition to a more gruesome version where
Rumpelstiltskin "in his rage drove his
right foot so far into the ground that it sank in up to
his waist; then in a passion he seized the left foot
with both hands and tore himself in two." Other versions
have
Rumpelstiltskin driving his right foot so
far into the ground that he creates a chasm and falls
into it, never to be seen again. In the oral version
originally collected by the brothers Grimm,
Rumpelstiltskin flies out of the window on
a cooking ladle.
This production, made possible by a
generous grant from the
James and Abigail
Campbell Foundation,
performs specifically to 6th,
7th and 8th grade students from the Leeward area.

THE PUNCHBOWL MUSIC FESTIVAL
April 22-23, 2008
In sweet music is such art,
killing care and grief of heart...
- Shakespeare
In 2006, through a grant from the
Hawaii State Foundation on Culture & Arts, the Hawaii Theatre Center was
able to host, for the first time, the 4th Annual
PUNCHBOWL MUSIC FESTIVAL.
This festival brought together neighboring schools; Central Middle School,
Kawananakoa Middle School, and Stevenson Middle School; together in a
professional setting which allowed for comfortable attendance of family,
friends, and faculty.
The
PUNCHBOWL MUSIC FESTIVAL
features both "Beginning" and "Concert" bands from each school as
well as a Beginning and Concert "Honor Band" comprised of students from each
of the schools.
In our historic professional venue,
these students are afforded the opportunities of musical performance as well
as social interaction with other students in a safe and professional
setting. The Hawaii Theatre looks forward to once again hosting the
PUNCHBOWL MUSIC FESTIVAL for
its 5th Anniversary!

What's past is prologue...
- Shakespeare
Prospero,
the rightful Duke of Milan, is ousted by
Antonio, his scheming
younger brother, and turned adrift at sea with his three-year-old daughter,
Miranda. Eventually they
cast ashore on an island, the sole mortal inhabitant of which is
Caliban, the son of Scyorax
– a North African witch who had been banished to the island years earlier,
but who had died before Prospero’s
arrival. The island is also inhabited by spirits, whom
Prospero commands with his
magic, the chief of whom is Ariel.
The play begins twelve years after
Prospero’s exile – Prospero
actually relates all the preceding events to
Miranda almost in the manner
of a flashback, the action is not represented on stage. When the play opens,
then, a ship carrying Antonio,
Alonso, the King of Naples
(who had conspired with Antonio
in the overthrow of Prospero),
Alonso’s brother and son,
Sebastian and
Ferdinand, along with
various sailors, Neapolitan courtiers, and retainers, sails past
Prospero’s island on its way
from Tunis in North Africa to Naples.
Prospero raises a storm –
the tempest of the title – through the power of his magic, and wrecks their
ship. The passengers are all saved, but
Ferdinand is washed ashore
in a different part of the island from his companions, and so believes
himself to be the sole survivor, while they in turn believe him to be dead.
In accordance with Prospero’s
plan, Ferdinand and
Miranda meet and fall in
love, and are very soon betrothed. Amongst the new arrivals to the island,
various conspiracies are hatched –
Sebastian and Antonio
conspire to murder, Alonso,
while Alonso’s drunken
butler and clown join up with
Caliban and plot the death of
Prospero - but all of these
amount to nothing. Finally, the spirit
Ariel, at
Prospero’s command, brings
everyone to Prospero’s cell.
Prospero reveals himself to
the company, forgives his brother on condition that he restores his dukedom
to him, and re-unites Alonso
with his son, Ferdinand, who
is discovered playing chess with
Miranda. Meanwhile, the ship that had been wrecked is miraculously
restored, but before the company embarks for Italy,
Prospero renounces his magic
and frees Ariel from his
service.
